Everton in talks for Burnley ace Maxwel Cornet but want delayed payment structure

Everton are set to hold further talks for Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet but want to delay any payments, according to the Daily Mail.

News of Everton’s interest in the Ivorian ace broke yesterday (15 July), with Fraser Fletcher reporting via Twitter that the Toffees were willing to meet his £17.5million release clause.

The Daily Mail confirmed the interest, but reported in their print edition (16 July, p.111) that the club want a delayed payment structure in the deal.

It is unclear whether delaying the payments will affect whether or not Burnley have to accept the offer as per the release clause in Cornet’s contract.

However, Fabrizio Romano reported on Twitter in the early hours of Saturday morning (16 July) that Burnley were preparing for life without the ace.

Get it done

A deal for Cornet makes perfect sense for all parties involved and Everton are right to pursue a move for the Ivorian.

The Toffees desperately need an injection of life into their forward line after Richarlison was sold to Tottenham earlier this summer while the player wants Premier League football.

If the reported fee of £17.5million is accurate then Cornet is available at a bargain price, making him the perfect signing given Everton’s difficult financial position.

He enjoyed a stellar debut Premier League season, scoring nine goals in a flat Burnley team that sank to the Championship.

Producing those sorts of numbers in a team renowned for lacking an attacking edge indicates that he can better his form if he is the main man in a more positive team.

Everton have already signed James Tarkowski from The Clarets this summer, so Cornet will be able to settle right in.

Cornet being available for such a bargain fee means there is likely no better deal for Everton to do this summer and Kevin Thelwell should pull out all the stops to wrap it up.
