Everton face competition from Leicester for signing of Marcus Tavernier

Everton are facing competition from Premier League rivals Leicester City for the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Tavernier, according to 90min.

The Toffees are coming off the back of a difficult season and are in the market to sign players to strengthen the squad ahead of the next campaign.

As per the latest report, the Toffees are now considering making a bid for the former England youth international.

The report also stated that Middlesbrough have already rejected bids from Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth but they remained hopeful that one out of the Toffees or the Foxes will be able to meet their valuation of the player.

Everton have only signed one player in this summer transfer window so far — centre-back James Tarkowski on a free from Burnley.

Complete Midfielder

Everton manager Frank Lampard has the difficult task of overhauling the squad after a disastrous campaign where they narrowly managed to escape relegation.

Most of the focus remained on strengthening the defensive unit but it is clear that Toffees are also eager to bolster the midfield which looked out of depth in the previous season.

Out of all the midfield options available at the club, it seems that only Abdoulaye Doucoure can consider himself a starter at the Goodison Park next season and other positions are clearly up for grab.

Therefore, if Tavernier joins Everton, he can perfectly form a fantastic pivot alongside the Mali international in the middle of the park as he is a left-footed player perfect to play on the left side of the midfield alongside Doucoure who can occupy the right side.

In the previous season, the 23-year-old played 44 matches in the Championship for his current club and scored five times along with providing five assists as well [Transfermarkt].
