Everton must beat Tottenham to sign Barcelona winger Memphis Depay

Everton must move quickly to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the race to secure the signature of Memphis Depay.

According to a report from Catalan newspaper Sport (18 July, page 9), Spurs have already made an offer in the region of £14.4m for the Dutch international.

Barcelona have already put him in the transfer market, and the Dutchman’s lawyer only came to know about the decision last week.

Depay is prepared to wait to see what happens next. Spurs have held talks with the player’s entourage, and it’s high time the Toffees must make a solid effort to secure his signature.

Super Deporte reported on 5 April that the Merseyside club had enquired about the possibility of signing the winger. This is the ideal time for Everton to make a concrete effort and lure him to the Premier League.

The Toffees need a quality attacking midfielder to replace the void left by Richarlison. They have been linked with a move for Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet, but surely Depay is a far better option.

The Dutchman may have failed to impress during his time at Manchester United but there’s no doubt about his quality. He is a world-class player. He scored 76 goals in 178 games for Lyon and last season managed 13 goals in all competitions for Barca.

In total, he has scored 146 goals in his club career and has managed 42 goals for his country. Known for his dribbling abilities, he is equally good at providing assists for his teammates.

At 28, he is at the peak of his career. The fact that he is available at a decent price should encourage the Toffees to get the deal done at the earliest.
