Finding proven defensive midfielder is key to successful campaign for Everton
Everton are coming off the back of a difficult campaign where they narrowly managed to escape relegation, courtesy of a matchday 37 win.
Manager Frank Lampard is in the process of overhauling the squad and have been linked with a number of players to strengthen different areas.
One thing which is extremely noticeable is the Chelsea legend’s interest in bolstering the midfield after having being linked with a number of players including Conor Gallagher, Marcus Tavernier and Billy Gilmour.

Interestingly, all of those players have similar kinds of attributes which makes it quite interesting to see what Lampard is trying to do at Goodison Park.
Risky call
Everton’s tough campaign last time around was largely due to their poor defensive performances throughout the campaign they conceded way too many goals for a team who was eager to finish in the top half.
One reason that was often overshadowed was the performance of the midfielder where there was hardly any steal other than Abdoulaye Doucouré with too many players having similar kind of roles like Andre Gomes, Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek.
Hardly any of those players had any positive performances for the Blues and it is interesting to see that Lampard is trying to do once again a similar thing by showing interest in midfielders who are would be creative but contribute very little off the ball.

It is important that Everton must not go down that route. They have a serious crisis regarding a holding midfielder role where Allan has clearly passed his prime and Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s potential is still unknown.
For now, the focus should be on finding that player who would bring some steel and help the side defensively more than anything else.
