Alan Myers: Everton must spend more wisely in remainder of transfer window

Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers has suggested that Everton have “to do the right deals now” and “spend wisely” in the remainder of the transfer window.

Everton have only added 29-year-old free agent James Tarkowski to their squad at present with the Toffees currently on their pre-season tour of America.

Myers believes that the Goodison Park hierarchy simply have to get their remaining business right if they want to progress from last season.

The Sky Sports journalist wrote (via Twitter) on Tuesday 18 July: “Important to bear in mind that the DOF (Kevin Thelwell) has to do the right deals now, make the money go further and spend wisely.

“Gone are the days of throwing money around, each signing has to have value and a good reason for it happening.”

Myers also said he “wouldn’t expect any incomings until the team are back from the States” with “nothing imminent”.

Spot on

Myers is spot on in terms of what needs to happen at Goodison Park in the coming weeks but surely something needs to happen quickly at the Toffees.

Considering Everton have lost their most influential attacker in Richarlison this summer and only added one player to their ranks thus far, there is plenty of reason to be concerned for Evertonians.

The issue for Everton is that they cannot panic and rush into making last-minute signings that won’t make the right impact at Goodison Park.

everton

It feels as if a lot more planning could’ve gone into the recruitment policy a little bit earlier than it has at present.

Obviously there were question marks over which league Everton would be playing in towards the back end of the 2021/22 season, but surely there should’ve been planning for either scenario?

A loan bid for Maxwel Cornet is the most Evertonians have had to shout about at present.

With the season a matter of weeks away it will take an immense effort to get the Toffees in a good position heading into the 2022/23 campaign.
