View: Three Premier League midfielders Everton should be looking at this summer

Everton have been in the market for a central midfielder this summer, but here are three cost-effective targets the club should be looking at.

The Toffees have been eyeing someone to deploy in the middle of the park, recently being linked to the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Harry Winks, Billy Gilmour, and Conor Gallagher.

However, there are some possible Premier League bargains that the club could take a look at if they fail to land any of their other targets.

  1. Ainsley Maitland-Niles

The midfielder was once one of the hottest prospects in the Arsenal team, having a solid run in the team in 2020 and even starting their FA Cup final win.

Nowadays, he is seen as surplus to requirements and is on the fringes of the Arsenal team after mediocre loan spells at West Brom and Roma in recent years.

The Englishman, who received two full international caps for his country in 2020, has played in a central midfield role before and is notable for his nonchalant and composed manner on the ball, with his midfield performance against Watford last season being particularly impressive.

The versatile midfielder, who can also be deployed at full-back, is still only 24, and with a consistent run in the team, could still be an astute signing for Frank Lampard, especially with his contract expiring next summer.

2. Leander Dendoncker

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract and would be a smart and cost-effective signing for the Toffees.

Dendonker, who moved to Wolves from Belgian side Anderlecht in 2019, is a strong midfield enforcer, who has very impressive heading ability.

Standing at six feet two, Dendoncker is rarely beaten in the air, and when you add his surprising mobility and Premier League experience to this, it is clear why this is a transfer that Everton are pondering.

The Belgian international has made 29 appearances for his country as well as 154 appearances for Wolves since moving to the Molineux.

He is tidy in possession, dominant in the air, and as well as undoubtedly adding steel to the Everton midfield, he would also be the most cost-effective option on this list.

3. James Garner

The third option would probably be the most difficult target to attain but he would be by far the most exciting option on the list.

The Manchester United midfielder is one of the biggest talents to come through the youth academy, and has had fans clamouring to see him get game time at Old Trafford.

Such is his talent, Garner has already made seven first-team appearances for the club, including European appearances, in addition to his two loan spells away from the clubs.

You may be aware of Garner after being an integral part of the Nottingham Forest side who gained promotion last season, making 49 appearances at the City Ground as the Reds won the play-off final.

Your archetypal number six, Garner would be a difficult move to secure, but if Manchester United are willing to let him go – most likely on loan – it should be a deal that Lampard and the Everton board are all over.

In other Everton news, Dele Alli reportedly hit a new low during a pre-season loss.
