Sky Sports pundit excited Everton are in battle to sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Everton will “do well to get” Levi Colwill from Chelsea this summer amid competition from Southampton, according to Kevin Campbell.

The 19-year-old is back at Stamford Bridge after a break-out season on loan at Huddersfield and according to Fabrizio Romano the Toffees are “really keen” to bring him to Goodison Park this summer, with the youngster wanting game time.

While Chelsea are chasing expensive defensive recruits he could be available, but the Saints will provide stiff competition, and Sky Sports pundit Campbell believes it will be a significant coup if Everton manage to pull it off.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “Colwill can play full-back as well can’t he? He’s quite versatile.

“I just think Everton need to get younger and get some quality in.

“I think [James] Tarkowski’s a great signing, but Levi Colwill I think is a really good player.

“He’s done really well at Huddersfield and proven himself.

“So I’m sure Southampton are going to push as well for him.

“I think Everton will do well to get him in if I’m honest with you.”

The summer transfer window is proving to be somewhat of an ordeal for those in charge at Goodison Park, with only free agent Tarkowski so far brought in.

There is no apparent shortage of targets but actual signings are proving hard to come by.

While there is a definite need to boost midfield and attack it was the defence that was the biggest issue last season and further help on top of the ex-Burnley man would certainly not go amiss, especially after the club were humiliated 4-0 by Minnesota United in preseason.
