Everton offered former midfielder Idrissa Gueye back from Paris Saint-Germain

Everton have been offered the chance to re-sign Idrissa Gana Gueye back from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, the Daily Mail reports.

The 32-year-old is set to leave the Parc des Princes and only has a year left on his contract with the French champions.

The midfielder left Goodison Park in 2019 for a fee of around £30million [BBC Sport], after asking to leave the club.

Frank Lampard has been after reinforcements at the position during the summer transfer window and was interested in Lille’s Amadou Onana for a holding midfield role but the club have struggled badly to bring people in.

Gueye has played 111 games in the French capital since leaving Everton originally and was previously renowned for his tackle and interception statistics in the Premier League.

The Senegalese international was a standout in the Toffees midfield between 2016 and 2019, playing what Sky Sports called at the time of his exit a “leading role”.

Option

It is tough to see which way the club will go on this having been handed the chance to sign a player when so many of their own pursuits are proving fruitless.

Gueye was a key part of the Toffees midfield in his previous stint, but left for PSG at a time when the club had not wanted to sell him.

There were rumblings that they were looking to bring him back in January [Mirror] but with Lampard only appointed at the very end of the window that never happened.

Since then the player was involved in controversy when he was accused of refusing to play in a match in May where the game shirts featured rainbow colours to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia [Times].

Clearly, three years further down the line he will not be the exact same player that he was when he left, but he has featured regularly in Ligue 1, which cannot be said for everyone they bring in.

Everton would certainly benefit from a player of his type currently, and having had interest in him this year there is reason to believe that they could be tempted again if his availability also means he is affordable.

Under normal circumstances it would probably not be a priority to revisit an ageing former player however, and the boycotting incident could factor into their decision-making.
