Everton want Dwight McNeil as well as Maxwel Cornet from Burnley

Everton are still trying to land Ivory Coast wing-back Maxwel Cornet as well as Dwight McNeil with a deal for the 22-year-old Englishman to be completed soon according to Fraser Fletcher.

Fletcher, who has previously worked for the BBC has suggested (via Twitter, 27 July) that the Toffees have a “verbal agreement” in place to sign McNeil.

However, it has also be revealed that the Toffees are still trying to sign Cornet, with Fulham, Nottingham Forest and an unnamed Premier League club all trying to sign the versatile wingback.

Things starting to happen

Finally, transfer activity is starting to really ramp up at Goodison Park after a very slow start to the summer for the club.

James Tarkowski has been joined by former Wolves defender Ruben Vinagre, as Frank Lampard looks to bolster his backline for the upcoming campaign.

A move for the Burnley duo does make sense for the Toffees, with McNeil and Cornet potentially being picked up for slightly under their actual valuation due to the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship.

Both players can play a variety of positions and would allow Lampard to alter which formation he decides to adopt.

However, it is crucial that Lampard doesn’t utilise too much of his budget with a striker still a priority after Richarlison’s move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Cornet would probably be the more exciting player to target with the 25-year-old scoring nine goals for the Clarets in the 2021/22 season.

McNeil on the other hand only managed one assist last season.

Nevertheless, he is still a player that could well prove smart business for Everton if he can rediscover his goalscoring touch at Goodison Park.
