Everton: Rennes enter race for Tottenham defender, deal at advanced stage

Everton could be set to miss out on Tottenham defender Joe Rodon as Ligue 1 side Rennes look to complete the loan signing of the Welsh international.

It had been reported by talkSPORT (28 June) that Everton were interested in the central defender.

However, The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano has reported on Thursday 28 July (via Twitter) that a loan deal is now at the final stages for Rodon to make the switch to France.

It seems a shame that Frank Lampard hasn’t made a move for the Welsh international, especially given the fact that he was allowed a temporary switch to the French side.

A loan move could’ve worked well for Everton due to his wages remaining mostly covered by Tottenham.

It’s fair to say that Lampard does need to add another centre-back to his ranks this summer after Jarrad Branthwaite’s exit to PSV Eindhoven.

James Tarkowski will undoubtedly add some much-needed defensive quality to Lampard’s squad, but considering Everton’s defensive record last season, another robust addition wouldn’t go a miss.

Rodon is only 24 and would’ve suited the calibre of player that Everton are trying to target this summer.

It’s certainly a shock to see the Tottenham man make the move to France considering Everton’s interest.

Lampard will now have to identify another defensive player to add to his ranks and bolster his back line.

The Everton boss should be focusing all his efforts on landing a striker and another defender before the window slams shut in just over a month’s time.
