Everton want Billy Gilmour loan as Ross Barkley move now unlikely

Everton are focusing their attention on signing Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan for the new season, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper has reported on its website that links with Ross Barkley are wide of the mark, with Aston Villa more likely to make a move for him this summer.

Instead, Frank Lampard is looking at Gilmour to fix his midfield issues with the boss a big fan of the young Scottish sensation and what he could bring to Goodison Park.

This comes after 90min reported in the last 24 hours that Everton were closing in on a major permanent double deal from Stamford Bridge and the Chelsea squad.

It was shared that talks were progressing over a permanent swoop for both Barkley and Michy Batshuayi as Lampard looks to strengthen his squad.

Funnily enough, any arrivals from the London club would face their old side on the opening day of the Premier League season next week, but that now looks unlikely.

Realistically, moves for Barkey and Batshuayi made little-to-no sense.

Both players will be on silly money at Chelsea and the Toffees are in a position where they need to be smart financially, not just throwing it up the wall.

Especially on two players that have failed to do anything significant in the Premier League for years now, Lampard needs options who can fight for the shirt.

Gilmour has more than proved he can do that in recent years, none more so than at the EUROs with Scotland, where he was given a shining role by Steve Clarke.

Lampard is a big fan from his time at Chelsea, and no doubt Gilmour would also welcome the chance of a reunion as he looks for consistent football away from Stamford Bridge.

That move to London hasn’t worked for him yet, but this is a chance to really get things going next season.
