Sky Sports pundit has no issue with Everton pursuit of former Liverpool man Georginio Wijnaldum

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Former Everton captain Kevin Campbell sees no issues with the club looking to sign former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.

La Gazetta dello Sport had reported on 26 July that the Toffees were ready to offer the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder a route back into the Premier League, with the 31-year-old set to leave the Parc des Princes.

Crossing the Merseyside divide is not taken lightly, and former Reds boss Rafael Benitez never really survived doing so last season, but Sky Sports pundit Campbell thinks the Toffees need to consider good players wherever they can find them and the Dutchman is one of those.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “Look, I just think it’s about good players, and Wijnaldum is a good player.

“You know what you’re going to get with him. Never a problem.

“Works hard, can score goals, he can do a lot.

“He can do a lot but obviously the Liverpool tie sometimes will put that to bed. He didn’t want to make that move.

“You can understand that, but if Everton are interested in players like that then they’re going to improve, because he’s a good player.”

It looks like Jose Mourinho is set to take the former Newcastle player to Roma just a year after he left Anfield for Paris, but considering his output in the Premier League and Frank Lampard needing to consider all options it was not a real shock that the Toffees were interested.

From the player’s point of view it clearly was not something that he wanted to risk, and the rivalry surely played a part in that.

But Everton may still be set to bring a PSG midfielder who previously played in the city back during this window, after being offered the opportunity to re-sign former Goodison stand-out Idrissa Gueye, with a potential move apparently now progressing fast.
