Everton to allow Jean-Philippe Gbamin to leave Goodison Park this summer

Everton are now willing to allow Ivory Coast international Jean-Philippe Gbamin to leave the club this summer, according to The Times.

The 26-year-old has made just eight appearances for the Toffees since he joined the club from German side Mainz in 2019 for £25million and spent the second half of the 2021-22 campaign on loan ta CSKA Moscow.

He was originally signed to replace Idrissa Gana Gueye who left Merseyside to join Paris Saint-Germain but Everton are now trying to finalise the Senegalese international’s return to the club.

That leaves Gbamin without a place in Frank Lampard’s squad who is trying his hardest to make more additions before the new Premier League season kicks off.

The Ivorian’s task has been made harder with the emergence of teenager Lewis Warrington who the manager wants to keep at Finch Farm to play a part this season.

About time

There will be a good chunk of Evertonians who had forgotten that Gbamin was still contracted to the club and there are even more of them who won’t mind to see him leave the club.

Not only did he cost the club a huge amount of money back in 2019 but he has continued to take his wages from Everton while offering nothing back to the team bar the odd substitute appearance.

That kind of contribution is not accepted by the Goodison Park faithful but through a combination of poorly-timed injuries and disappointing cameos, he has failed the fans.

It was a smart move to get him out of the club’s mind in January even if it meant sending him to Russia just before the war began with Ukraine and now Lampard faces the task of shifting him on again which won’t be easy.

You can imagine that he will be earning a pretty penny and any club able to afford that won’t want to have him either so Everton now have to hope that he will lower his wages drastically to push through an exit.
