Alan Brazil: Everton in for another tough Premier League campaign

Alan Brazil believes another tough season is in store at Goodison Park although he does feel that Everton will avoid relegation in the upcoming campaign.

Frank Lampard has added three new faces to his Everton squad this summer and could well add a fourth soon, with The Guardian reporting on 1 August that PSG midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye is set to return to the club.

However, Brazil believes that past failings have meant the club hierarchy has been reluctant to splash the cash this summer and he’s predicted another tough season for the Toffees.

Talking on talkSPORT Breakfast on 2 August, Brazil said: “I don’t think Everton will go down, I don’t think that’s going to be an issue going down.

“I think it’s going to be a tough season.

“I think with all the money they’ve spent over the years the owners are a little bit reluctant to dive in again, but at the same time it’s crucial they maintain their Premier League status.

“From Frank’s point of view, he needs fresh faces so they do need to help him out.”

Hard to predict

It’s really hard to predict what this season has in store for Everton after their transfer business thus far.

Leeds United finished behind Everton last season and have made some progressive additions this summer and certainly look in a better position that the Toffees at the moment.

Brazil could well be spot on by assuming that the club are reluctant to make the same mistakes that have plagued the Toffees in recent years.

Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski look solid additions at Goodison Park.

Tarkowski will certainly make the Toffees a more cohesive and solid defensive unit this season and McNeil could well be an astute long-term acquisition for Lampard.

However, after losing Richarlison, it’s not a ridiculous opinion to suggest that Everton are in the same or a slightly worse off position than when they finished the 2021/22 season.

One or two more signings could well be all that is required at Goodison Park, with a striker surely a priority for Lampard after Richarlison’s exit.
