Everton are now at an advanced stage in discussions to re-sign Idrissa Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain, according to Sky Sports News journalist Kaveh Solhekol.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Tuesday (2 August), Solhekol reported that Blues manager Frank Lampard wants to continue adding players to his squad before the transfer window closes.

And it is understood that he’s making good progress in a move to bring Gueye, 32, back to Goodison Park.

“Everton continue advanced talks to sign Idrissa Gana Gueye from PSG as Frank Lampard looks for more signings,” said Solhekol live on Sky Sports on Tuesday night, as shown on the broadcaster’s website (1m1s).

More signings needed

Unless we make significant additions to this squad, we’re going to be in a relegation battle again next season.

While we understand why progress has been slow due to the Financial Fair Play restrictions in place, Lampard hasn’t been able to make the top additions that he would have no doubt wanted to make this summer.

As a free transfer, James Tarkowski is a very good signing.

Due to how bad our defence was last season, he’s easily the best addition that Lampard and Kevin Thelwell have made.

We’ve spent a lot on signing Dwight McNeil from Burnley. He’s a good young player but is he of the quality that we need right now?

And the loan signing of Ruben Vinagre from Sporting CP is just to add depth.

Gueye doesn’t impress us, if we’re honest.

He’ll turn 33 next month so he’s not a long-term addition and simply a short-term stop gap to add some experience to a very light midfield.

Is it enough to help us stay up?

If you consider the signings we’ve made and the loss of Richarlison, you’d have to admit we’d be lucky to avoid being in trouble next season unless big new signings are made.
