Everton move for Idrissa Gana Gueye could push one midfielder out of Goodison Park

Everton are set to bring midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye back to Goodison Park and that could well see one of Frank Lampard’s current midfield contingent leave the club.

Lampard has been looking to bolster his central midfield options after adding to his defence and attacking midfield options already this season.

The Guardian reported (1 August) that the Toffees are closing in on bringing Gueye back to the club after he left Goodison Park for PSG in 2019.

Everton’s current midfield certainly needs a refresh and Gueye’s return to Merseyside could well mean the likes of Andre Gomes, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure face somewhat uncertain futures at the club.

Gomes seems the most likely to leave Everton this season and Gueye’s arrival could now see Lampard and the club hierarchy sanction an exit for the 29-year-old midfielder.

It’s understood that Everton are looking for a fee in the region of £15million and £20million for Gomes.

The Toffees are potentially a little bit optimistic if they’re looking for over £10million for the midfielder after his disappointing spell at Goodison Park.

However, with Gueye returning to the club, Lampard may be inclined to let the midfielder leave the club for a lesser fee as the Everton boss looks to free up more of his wage budget.

Allan and Doucoure are certainly more unlikely to leave the club this summer, but with both players nearing the end of their contract, a departure is certainly not out of the question.

It’s an interesting move for Everton to bring 32-year-old Gueye back to the club, considering he is older than any of Everton’s current midfield options.

His performances this season will be interesting to keep an eye on for Evertonians.
