Alan Myers: Idrissa Gueye could be in Everton starting line-up v Chelsea

Idrissa Gueye could be in the Everton starting line-up to take on Chelsea on Saturday if he’s signed in time, according to Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night (2 August), Myers reported that talks are “ongoing” to bring the 32-year-old midfielder back to Goodison Park three years after he left for PSG.

It is understood that he’s not yet arrived at Finch Farm for a medical but the deal is “on track”.

When asked whether Gueye’s name could feature in Frank Lampard’s starting line-up for Everton versus Chelsea at Goodison on Saturday (6 August), Myers said: “I believe there is a chance of that.”

Out of the oven and into the fire

Gueye’s had a decent spell at PSG.

Although he hasn’t exactly been a proper mainstay of their starting line-up, he has been a first-team regular and won two Ligue 1 titles and reached the Champions League final.

It’s no doubt been tough for him at PSG to keep on playing with the wealth of talent around him but if he thinks he’s going to have it easier at Everton, he needs to think again.

Sure, he might stand out more in a midfield containing Tom Davies to one that boasts Marco Veratti.

But the pressure that he’ll be under at Goodison Park will be immense with the Blues no doubt aiming to avoid a relegation battle again next season.

Playing for PSG at the top of Ligue 1 is one thing.

Playing for Everton at the wrong end of the Premier League is another.

You’re deluded if you don’t think next season will be another slog for the Toffees and hopefully the addition of Gueye will mean we at least get towards the end of the campaign without safety being a concern.

But the reality is that this squad is not really any better than the one we had last season and we don’t have a game-changer like Richarlison anymore.
