Everton blow as Maxwel Cornet prefers move to West Ham United

Everton are been pushing to sign Burnley’s versatile wing-back Maxwel Cornet this summer but could well have received a blow as West Ham is his preferred destination.

CBSSportsGolazo journalist Ben Jacobs wrote on Twitter on 31 July that Everton are pushing for the 25-year-old who has a £17.5million release clause.

However, it has since been revealed by former BBC journalist Fraser Fletcher (via Twitter, 2 August) that the London Stadium is an “extremely attractive” option for Cornet.

It’s understood that the prospect of European football is a big factor in Cornet’s decision.

This will come as a big blow to Frank Lampard with the Toffees seemingly in a good position to bring the winger to Goodison Park this summer.

His versatility, pace and finishing ability would’ve been an excellent option for Lampard to utilise had he made the move to the club.

Ultimately, if the Toffees do miss out on Cornet it won’t be their fault with the prospect of European football impossible to match.

Lampard will need to add to his attacking options in the coming weeks, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin his only out-and-out striker at present.

Cornet showed last year his ability to play as a second striker and was a real threat at times for Burnley, scoring nine Premier League goals.

If he does choose West Ham over the Toffees then Lampard must move on to other potential targets quickly.

Three new additions this summer is probably slightly less than what was expected from Evertonians after last season’s awful campaign.

With the new Premier League season a matter of days away there is still plenty of work to do at Goodison Park.
