Everton midfielder Dele Alli could play in false nine role v Chelsea

Frank Lampard has confirmed on Wednesday (3 August) that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is certain to miss the opening Premier League game against Chelsea.

The Toffees striker has picked up a “freak” injury, and he could be out for a long time, although the club are hoping that he could make a return quickly.

According to Liverpool Echo, Lampard could use Dele Alli in the ‘false nine’ role for the game. Academy talent Lewis Dobbin could come in contention as well.

Sign someone

The Toffees need to sign a new striker before the end of the transfer window.

Calvert-Lewin missed a chunk of action last season through injuries, and it seems the bad luck is just not going away.

The next few months are absolutely crucial for Calvert-Lewin. He needs to play regularly and score as well to secure his place in the England squad for the World Cup.

He will hope that the injury is not so serious and that he can recover quickly.

The spotlight now has shifted on to other players, especially Dele Alli. Dobbin is an exciting talent, but Lampard is unlikely to throw him into the middle of the action against his former club.

Alli generally plays behind the striker. He is an attacking midfielder by trade, but on this occasion, he could be used to play upfront in the false nine role.

If Calvert-Lewin remains absent for a long spell, Salomon Rondon could be an option for Lampard.

Above all, the Toffees need to sign a new striker, asap.
