Everton close in on loan-to-buy swoop for Wolves captain Conor Coady – Paul Joyce
Everton could sign Wolves centre-back Conor Coady on a loan-to-buy deal, according to Times journalist Paul Joyce.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Sunday afternoon (7 August), Joyce reported that the Blues are “closing in on” a deal to sign the 29-year-old England international.
It is understood that the Toffees could strike an initial loan agreement with Wolves with a view to the deal being made permanent in the future.
More than happy
If Everton can make this a loan-to-buy with an option for the deal to be made permanent, that will be perfect.
However, it’s likely that this is going to be a deal that sees Everton obliged to sign Coady on a full-time basis next year because it’s a good way to skirt around potential Financial Fair Play issues this summer.
The Daily Mail also reported on Sunday that the deal for Coady has been mooted to be worth £12million plus add-ons.
And with Amadou Onana moving to Goodison Park from Lille for over £30million, it means that Everton’s finances might not be able to support an eight-figure deal for Coady this summer.
Next year, it should be fine, which is why Kevin Thelwell is most likely looking at this loan-to-buy agreement with his former club Wolves.

Coady should be a very solid addition to Everton’s defence, which was ravaged on Saturday (6 August) when Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina both suffered injuries in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
If we have a back-three of Mason Holgate, James Tarkowski and Coady when we play Aston Villa next weekend, we’ll be very happy.
Thelwell and Frank Lampard deserve a lot of praise for this.
