Idrissa Gueye rejects Nottingham Forest, Everton in pole position to complete signing

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye has rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest amid interest from Everton, according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Sunday (7 August), the French journalist reported Everton are in pole position to re-sign their former midfielder, who’s turned down a three-year deal with Forest.

It is understood from the Foot Mercato website that Renato Sanches’ arrival in Paris has forced Gueye to become one of the undesirables at PSG.

Gueye’s now being pushed towards the PSG exit but if Everton fail to sign the 32-year-old, he’ll end up staying put with the Ligue 1 champions.

Getting closer

It feels as though this deal is dragging on a bit.

While there’s no massive rush to sign Gueye as he might not be a regular starter for Everton this season, it would still be nice to get it over and done with so we can focus more on signing a striker.

Everton have really ramped up their transfer business in the last week or so.

It would have been nice to see Frank Lampard and Kevin Thelwell get these deals done sooner but it feels as though a lot had to be done beforehand, perhaps due to Financial Fair Play.

Richarlison’s move to Tottenham was the moment that opened the floodgates but the water did take a long time to start flowing.

Everton

But finally, we’re seeing a rush of activity and we just hope that these new signs are able to hit the ground running at Goodison Park because we’re going to need it.

We cannot say we’re totally confident of avoiding a relegation battle this season.

As Everton fans, we should be talking about challenging for Europe.

It’ll be silly to do that yet and we have to remain grounded in what are expectations are.

And what we think is reasonable for this season is to simply avoid a battle against the drop.
