Sky Sports pundit predicts Everton exodus as transfer window nears conclusion

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

It is the reality of modern football that Everton have struggled to shift unwanted players this summer, but that could still change says Kevin Campbell.

At the end of the 2021/22 season it was widely expected that a number of the higher earners at the club would be moved on to help Frank Lampard restock the squad over the summer, but aside from the expiry of Fabian Delph and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s contracts that hasn’t proven to be the case.

It appeared to be hampering incoming business over the majority of the window, but that has changed in a major way of late, and Sky Sports pundit Campbell thinks that as clubs’ needs become more pressing late in the window there could still be a number of departures from Goodison.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “This is modern football for you. This is modern day football.

“Fortunately or unfortunately, whichever way you want to look at the coin, which side of the coin you want to look at, this is part and parcel of modern day football.

“Because if a club likes you, and one club wants you out, and the club that like you [offer] a financial package that isn’t right, it’s well within the player’s rights not to go.

“Back in the day it was a matter of, ‘I need to play football’, because the bonuses will help you.

“Now, everyone’s well paid. Rightfully so.

“I think it just has to be the right fit. A lot of it’s [down to] the right fit, the money’s got to be right before you get players actually deciding to leave a club like Everton.

“So it’s going to be interesting coming up to the end of the window, it might start getting a little bit hectic – outgoings – because there’s other teams who are going to have needs.”

The likes of Andre Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Allan, and even Yerry Mina were mooted as candidates for the exit but are all still there, and the Colombian’s latest injury surely ensures he will remain past deadline day.

But as options run out for other teams it would be very helpful for Everton to able to move a few of the incumbents out to ease the pressure on the wage bill, and to give the players a new start.

That is particularly the case in midfield where Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye have been added to the top of the pecking order, and there could still be another arrival, considering the well documented financial constraints at the club.
