Rio Ferdinand shares grim details of serious injury for Everton defender Ben Godfrey
Rio Ferdinand has shared added detail on the injury Everton defender Ben Godfrey suffered in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday evening.
Godfrey broke his leg making a recovery tackle in the first half of the game and has subsequently been ruled out for around three months while he recovers.
Ferdinand acts as a mentor to the 24-year-old defender and told his Vibe with Five podcast that he spoke with Godfrey after the incident and shared some extra detail on the injury while also suggesting that the Toffees need to make signings to secure their Premier League status.
“I just think recruitment.. you’ve got to get people in the building,” he said. “He’s [Lampard] got to get bodies in.
“They need to bring in some attacking players because I can’t see goals at the moment. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injured, Dele Alli’s playing up front, Ben Godfrey got a bad injury.
“I spoke to him yesterday, it’s the fibula bone. He’s done his ankle and that and there’s a bone break in there.
“His head would have been trying to get into that [World Cup squad]. But listen he’s a strong kid, he’ll come back strong I’m sure with character. Good professional. Good luck to Ben.”
Horror
It was a total freak accident what happened to Godfrey and thankfully the prognosis doesn’t seem to be as bad as many feared initially.
But Ferdinand’s mention of the ankle isn’t a good thing at all if true and that could further complicate the recovery period for Godfrey and affect him in the future.

A clean bone break is a simple healer and while not pretty, is a pretty standard injury. But ligaments can be tricky and can take their toll on players for years afterwards if not healed up properly.
If anyone is to know it would be Ferdinand, who is known to have a very good and close relationship with Godfrey, but hopefully that has all been accounted for in the club’s prognosis of three months out.
It’s a huge blow for the team, but the most important thing is that the player is okay and will hopefully make a full recovery to come back and be the top defender we know he can become.
Everton have managed to replace him quickly by bringing in Conor Coady on loan with the option to buy next summer.
