Everton hit wall in Idrissa Gana Gueye talks over transfer fee disagreement

Everton have now hit a wall in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, according to 90min.

The 32-year-old only left Goodison Park three years ago but the Toffees are now trying to bring him back to Merseyside and it was looking good when he was thought to have finished the first part of his medical on 8 August [Fraser Fletcher].

But 90min now claim that talks between Everton and the French champions have reached an impasse with neither side being able to agree on a transfer fee.

The Toffees had thought that they could get a cut-price deal for the Senegal international with Christophe Galtier telling him that he is not in the Parisiens’ plans for the 2022-23 campaign.

But they have not come up with the money that PSG are after and Everton could now look to other targets and abandon their pursuit of their former player.

Step back

With this latest stumbling block appearing larger than any other so far, Kevin Thelwell and Frank Lampard could do with taking a step back to reassess their transfer strategy.

They are not out of the race for Gueye at all right now so they can afford to take their time and formulate a bid that suits them as long as it is acceptable for PSG.

With Amadou Onana already signed at Goodison Park, the desperate nature for a midfielder is no longer as large as it once was but if a cut-price deal can be struck then it is worth returning to the 32-year-old after some time away.

But they can’t just look at this one target because if it doesn’t work out, they will be left without another player to aim for and that would be an even bigger problem.

It might be wise to focus on Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa before returning to the transfer table in any capacity.
