Kaveh Solhekol: Everton consider swoop to sign Coventry striker Viktor Gyökeres

Everton are mulling over a swoop to sign Coventry star Viktor Gyökeres in a bid to heal Frank Lampard’s striker headache at Goodison Park, according to Kaveh Solhekol.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Thursday (12 August), Solhekol reported that Gyökeres, 24, is a player on Everton’s radar as they aim to add to their striker options with Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured.

Solhekol also mentioned speculation linking Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Mohamed Camara to Goodison Park [Daily Mail] but it’s Sweden international Gyökeres who the Blues are currently looking into.

“Everton [are] considering a move for Coventry striker Viktor Gyökeres. They’re also being linked with Mohamed Camara, who’s at Salzburg,” said the Sky Sports News journalist, as shown in a video clip on the Sky Sports website.

Is he good enough?

Gyökeres has never played in the Premier League. The Championship is arguably the biggest and best league the Swedish striker has ever starred in.

He’s scored 21 times in his 76 second-tier appearances in England across spells at Coventry and Swansea – but that’s not the kind of record we’d be that keen on in a striker.

If Gyökeres was an up-and-coming young player who’d started to make his mark in the Championship then fair enough, we’d be happy to see him signed up.

However, Gyökeres is 24 and scoring a half-decent sum of goals for Coventry doesn’t mean he’s good enough to make the step up to Everton and compete for a spot with Calvert-Lewin.

Last term, Gyökeres scored 17 goals in 45 Championship appearances for the West Midlands outfit and has started this season well with a goal in his side’s opening-day draw away at Sunderland.

The ex-Brighton striker has talent, clearly. But we don’t feel as though he’s good enough for Everton.

If we want to carry on being in a relegation battle every year then fair enough, go ahead and sign Gyökeres.

But fans are rightly demanding the Blues to be up there in the Premier League and challenging for places in European football.

We doubt that Gyökeres would help us do that.
