Andrei Kanchelskis urges Anthony Gordon to snub Chelsea interest to extend stay with Everton

Former Russia midfielder Andrei Kanchelskis has urged young winger Anthony Gordon to stay at Everton despite interest from league rivals Chelsea.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park in the ongoing transfer window with the London-based club leading the charge [Sky Sports].

However, the 53-year-old, who also represented the Toffees for 18 months, believes that the player should stay at the club for at least another season and follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney.

“Gordon is a great player,” he said while talking to OLBG. “He’s like Rooney, a younger player for Everton.

“Chelsea are interested in him. I think he should stay this season at Everton then move to another club next season like Rooney did.

“Rooney stayed for one or two seasons then moved. If Gordon stays and wants to play over money, he will be a good player, that is very important for all young players.”

Too important

Everton arrived in the transfer window knowing that they will have to sign a lot of players, not only to strengthen some areas but also to replace key players like Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

While the Brazil international has left the club and joined Tottenham Hotspur, the England international is set to stay after suffering an injury in the preseason.

One of the players Frank Lampard has been keen to keep in Gordon and there is no reason to let a player of that quality at such a young age leave when there is ample amount of time left in his career to join another club in the future.

It is important that Everton’s manager must not change his stance about the 21-year-old and keep him, especially in the window where they are still having a hard time replacing Richarlison and there is no guarantee that they will be able to replace a player like Gordon.
