Sky Sports pundit fears Everton losing Anthony Gordon like Ross Barkley and Francis Jeffers

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

If Anthony Gordon wants to leave Everton then the club might as well bank the money and move on, according to Kevin Campbell.

After flatly blocking approaches for the young winger from Tottenham and Newcastle this summer the club are battling to keep hold of their homegrown star in the face of heavy pressure from Chelsea, and the signs are that the player wants the move.

Sky Sports pundit, and former Toffees captain, Campbell doesn’t want the 21-year-old to leave but having seen this pattern repeat itself since the days when he was playing at Goodison Park he is ready to deal with losing the latest Finch Farm product.

“I think Everton CAN keep hold of him obviously,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

I don’t know what the internals of what’s going on. I believe a new contract’s been offered to Anthony Gordon.

“And from what I’m hearing his representatives have said he won’t be signing a new contract.

“So that tells me that they want to go.

“So if that is the case I think Everton are well within their rights to get the most money for him and move him on.

“He’s a young lad. He’s not the finished article. But Everton could use that money to make some moves.

“Again, getting precious over a homegrown player, we’ve seen it happen at Everton *laughs*.

“I was involved with it with Franny Jeffers. We saw Ross Barkley obviously come in and go. And now Anthony Gordon.

“If Everton need to do that to get more quality in then that’s what they have to do.

“I’d love to see them keep him but if the player doesn’t want to stay then it goes against the grain doesn’t it if you keep a player that doesn’t want to be at the club.”

To Barkley and Jeffers could just as easily be added Wayne Rooney, and with Chelsea already having offered £45million for Gordon and likely ready to come back and hit the £50million mark the signs are ominous.

Having lost Richarlison this summer, for another of the genuine bright spots from the relegation threatened 2021/22 season to go is sure not to be popular.

Frank Lampard won’t want to see him leave, and there will be questions as to how much the manager could actually do with the money with so little time left in the window, so it will be a big blow to the fans if this one happens, and won’t be the first time they’ve been through it.
