Sky Sports pundit expects Anthony Gordon interest in Chelsea amid Everton position struggles
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Chelsea would be attractive for Everton star Anthony Gordon amid position struggles at Goodison Park currently, says Kevin Campbell.
The Toffees’ lack of a striker with Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured and Salomon Rondon suspended led to the young winger being deployed as a false-nine by Frank Lampard for the start of the season, where he didn’t have his usual impact, and he is now the subject of a serious approach from the side he played that role against on the opening weekend.
Sky Sports pundit Campbell believes that the 21-year-old is “not experienced enough” to feature in that position and won’t be there for long if the club successfully sign a new striker or Venezuelan Rondon comes back into the team, but can see why he might be tempted by a move to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “I think just where the clubs are at the moment, Everton just missed out on relegation obviously, whereas Chelsea have got Champions League football and stuff like that
“Going down to London etc. Maybe that’s a lure. Obviously the wages might be a pull as well.
“But where he’s playing for Everton, he’s serving a purpose. It’s not his position and he’s not experienced enough to play it if I’m honest with you.
“He was helping out. He was doing a job. But I can’t see him playing there once Rondon, who obviously came on at the weekend [is back], and they’re looking at bringing some players in.
“If you bring a striker in Anthony Gordon won’t be playing there, that’s for sure.
“I just see it as it was a temporary measure and he’s a winger by trade, he’s a wide player.
“So I think he’ll revert back to that spot.”

Surely Rondon needs to be put back in the team up top, if only to free up his teammates to play their natural games better.
If he isn’t seen fit to lead the line in the absence of any other natural option then there is no point him being at the club.
Gordon being forced to toil out of position can’t be the best backdrop for a major approach from a team in Europe’s top competition, although their own use of Raheem Sterling as a false-nine should probably factor into his thinking.
Fans will have to hope that a win against Nottingham Forest with the homegrown star back to his best on the wing can change his outlook until the window shuts at least, as nobody wants to see him join a long list of Finch Farm products who left too soon.
