Alan McInally stunned by what he’s heard about Anthony Gordon amid £60m Everton exit talk

Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally is stunned after hearing that Anthony Gordon wants to quit Everton in order to join Chelsea.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday (23 August) that Gordon, 21, has told Frank Lampard he wants to join Chelsea with the London club reportedly willing to pay £50million plus £10million in add-ons.

McInally seems unimpressed by Gordon’s attitude and rates it unlikely that he’ll amount to much at Stamford Bridge.

The former Aston Villa and Scotland striker says that the Toffees should wash their hands of Gordon and take the money that Chelsea are said to be stumping up.

“I heard he wanted to leave. £60million for Anthony Gordon,” said McInally, as shown on Sky Sports Premier League’s Twitter account on Tuesday night (23 August).

“Listen, I don’t know who’s talking to him, I don’t know who his agent is. But if he thinks he’s good enough to go and play for Chelsea and has told Everton he wants to leave, then Everton will say, ‘ok, thanks ever so much, we’ll take £60million’.

“I’m a little bit surprised that Chelsea have…I don’t know if it’s their valuation or Everton’s valuation but it’s a lot of money for Anthony Gordon having played the number of games he’s played, the influence he has on an Everton team that isn’t exactly hitting the highlights at the moment and he’s still very young.

“There are a couple of players that have gone to Chelsea and we’ve never seen again. You know what I mean, they’ve struggled to get into the team.

“If he’s pretty confident he can go down to Chelsea and get in that team then by all means, Everton will drive him down tonight and take the cheque back for £60million.”

McInally added: “He’s at a big club. I know they’re struggling at the moment.

“He’s a local boy and fans adore him.

“But there are a couple of things I’ve heard where I’ve been a bit like, ‘really, he really thinks he’s that good?’.”

Get rid

If Chelsea offer £60million for Gordon, the club’s got to take it and run.

Everton’s financial situation isn’t a great one now thanks to years of over-spending during the Farhad Moshiri regime and the books to be balanced one way or another.

It’s not every day that the club produces a talent like Gordon who’s valued so highly by another team. But here we are.

We don’t want to see Gordon go but no player is bigger than the club itself and right now, Everton Football Club needs as much money as it can get.

If we keep running it close with FFP then we’re going to steadily get a squad that’s worse than the one that came before it and a manager that was worse than the one before.

Look at the business we’ve done in the last year, saying goodbye to big-name players only to bring in less reputable players who’re taking a chance on because they’re cheaper and younger.

We’ve signed some good players this summer, granted. But we cannot have more transfer windows when we’re scrimping around for the Salomon Rondons and the Andros Townsends of football.

If Gordon wants to go, no one should stand in his way because for the money that’s being offered, it’s not worth keeping around a player whose heart is elsewhere.

If he wants to ruin his career at Chelsea then that’s on him.
