Everton urged to take Anthony Gordon exit on the chin over ‘monopoly money’

Everton are facing the prospect of losing another of their star players this summer but Dean Saunders thinks they should take it on the chin.

As reported by journalist Frazer Fletcher, Anthony Gordon has agreed on personal terms with Chelsea as the Blues push to complete a deal worth £60million for the 21-year-old.

Saunders, a pundit for talkSPORT, thinks that kind of money can’t be ignored and that there is little Everton can do to stop the deal from happening before the window closes.

“Players are worth a fortune nowadays aren’t they? It’s ridiculous the amount some players are worth,” Saunders said.

“There are two ways of looking at it for Everton; They either think ‘well that’s paid for our academy, it’s worth having one’ or you look at it the other way and think ‘what’s the point in having an academy? As soon as our players get into the team they get stolen from us’

“I think the Everton fans, in general, will be disappointed because he’s come right through and he shows a bit of enthusiasm. You can see that he is going to become a top player.

“Take the figures out, for now, it’s just monopoly money, they don’t want to lose one of their best young players but I’m afraid they’re just going to have to take it on the chin because money talks.

“Agents are running football and he’ll be gone soon.”

Sad truth

As horrible as it is to think about, money really does rule football right now and will do until the end of time so if Chelsea end up offering a massive wad of cash, Gordon is going to leave.

Farhad Moshiri, Frank Lampard and Kevin Thelwell can try all they want to stop it from happening but the humungous price the Blues are supposedly willing to pay would go a very long way at Goodison Park right now.

The Toffees are under pressure to sell before they can go and buy any more players and £60million could easily fund three new signings, if not more, which may be the added spice to the recipe Lampard has been after.

Demarai Gray has started to find his goal-scoring boots again and Dwight McNeil can be very productive if given the time to bed himself in so the options are there for the manager.

It would be ideal, though, if a Chelsea player were to come the opposite way to Gordon to help strengthen the side after a very poor start to the season.
