talkSPORT pundit baffled by £60million Chelsea pursuit of Everton star Anthony Gordon

Gabby Agbonlahor doesn’t understand the potential move from Everton to Chelsea of Anthony Gordon but says it has to be done.

The talkSPORT pundit is baffled as to why the Stamford Bridge side are even after the young winger considering what they have and what they need, let alone why they will pay so much money.

He admits it is strange for the Toffees to even consider selling him, but with the latest bid reportedly £50million up front with a further £10million in add-ons [talkSPORT] he says the decision makes itself.

Speaking live on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning (24 August), in a clip posted to the station’s Twitter the former Aston Villa forward said: “First of all I think it’s strange for Everton to even think of selling him, but when you talk about this amount of money you have to sell him.

“For me he’s a £30million, £40million at most, player… it’s hard to see where £60million has come from.

“If Everton, who need a number nine, can get £60million, or if they can get £50million and maybe [Armando] Broja on loan it’s definitely worth doing.

“It’s just strange from Chelsea, because they need a number nine. They’ve got wingers… Is Gordon going to change them from a wide point of view? Not for me.”

Money talks

Agbonlahor gets a lot of stick but he’s probably speaking for a lot of people this time, since it would have seemed outrageous to contemplate letting the homegrown star go only a few weeks ago.

But considering the money apparently on offer, and the other gaps in the squad, it is something that has to at least be considered.

The preference would still surely be to keep him and develop him into genuine Goodison star, while adding the long-awaited striking option anyway, and if that can be done it should 100% be the priority.

Everton

Had the club’s business all been done already they could simply block an exit, but with Richarlison still not replaced and the season now started with only Salomon Rondon in attack there are now pressing issues.

It certainly doesn’t make sense for Chelsea to be so fixated on Gordon when they also have other needs, especially when central striker is one of them and yet they still aren’t using the man that other clubs want to fill that role in Broja.

It would certainly feel unfinished for Gordon to go now, but considering plenty consider the same price to sell established star Richarlison too low this could be a chance to make up the difference there.

Everything entirely depends on who the club can and will bring in whether Gordon stays or goes.

If his sale is the key to unlocking everything else then they frankly have to do it, but if the final deals can be forced over the line without him leaving, or they aren’t confident of getting them done either way then losing him would just send the wrong message.
