Danny Murphy praises ‘remarkable’ Anthony Gordon performance for Everton v Brentford

Danny Murphy has heaped praise on Anthony Gordon’s performance in Everton’s 1-1 draw against Brentford at the weekend.

The 21-year-old scored the team’s only goal in the match as the Toffees secured a precious point away from home ahead of another trip to Leeds on Tuesday [30 August].

Murphy, while speaking on talkSPORT, heaped praise on Gordon, who according to him showed “remarkable courage” to perform the way he did despite his future at the club remaining uncertain.

“At a time when we jump on the negative and the attitude and the egos of the footballers, a young player to go out and perform like he [Gordon] did, not just the goal but he was at it again,” he said.

“His tenacity with and without the ball, his energy, his desire to win is there for all to see. After a week of speculation, people talking about he said this, he said that some fans are saying get rid, some fans are saying keep, hard to deal with.

“He must’ve had a tough week. Frank knows him better than I do obviously. He has put him in there, he told him to go out there and do his normal thing.

“But the strength of character for Gordon to go out there and perform the way he did with the speculation around that lad’s head and the pressure on everything he is doing at the moment, every word he says or doesn’t say, I think that showed remarkable courage and actually.”

Remarkable

At the weekend, Gordon once again showed why he remains undoubtedly the most important player for Everton in this window, especially after the departure of Richarlison who joined Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the summer.

The performance showed why Frank Lampard is so keen to keep hold of the player for at least another season because he can see that there is no player who can deliver what Gordon is capable of on the field of play.

The England U21 international is an Everton’s academy player and was promoted to the club’s senior team in January 2020.

Since then, Gordon has represented his current club in 64 matches across all competitions where he has managed to score five times and provided eight assists in the process [Transfermarkt].
