Fabrizio Romano shares state of play on Everton pursuit of Matheus Pereira

Everton are one of a few options for Brazilian playmaker Matheus Pereira and it’s a deal that should have an eye kept on it, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues are in the market to improve their attacking options before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday night, and former West Brom attacking midfielder Pereira has been linked with a move to Goodison Park [Sunday Mirror, 28 August].

Speaking in an interview with Wettfreunde, Romano said that while there is nothing nearby in terms of a deal being done, the player has got options and something could happen in the final 24 hours of the market.

“There are a few options for him,” he said. “There are always opportunities because he’s a very talented player, but he has to be consistent and that’s why he’s always looking for opportunities.

“But at the moment there is nothing nearby. It’s the typical name that moves in the last 24 hours of a market. We should keep an eye on him.”

Quality

Pereira was the star man during the Baggies promotion push a few years back and despite not being able to stop West Brom from being relegated the following season, he still managed to hit 11 goals and six assists.

He then opted to leave for a move to the Middle East, where he cited wanting to take a life-changing offer for the sake of his family, but now reportedly wants to return to England.

There are plenty of holes in this Everton squad right now and one of them is someone who can consistently create chances for the attackers to put away, and also someone who can chip in with goals. They have also looked at Daniel James from Leeds, but this would be a better option.

It’s unlikely to cost a huge amount to prize Pereira away from the Middle East despite their multi-millions, and Everton would benefit greatly from bringing him in.

It would allow Frank Lampard to field a more attacking formation and get more attacking players on the pitch, which will surely only help them in their chase to avoid relegation.
