Stephen Warnock baffled by Tom Davies booking v Leeds United in first half

Stephen Warnock was left baffled after Everton midfielder Tom Davies picked up a yellow card against Leeds United in the first half.

The Toffees have taken a 1-0 lead at Elland Road at the break, through Anthony Gordon, but moments later, Davies made a silly attempt to take the ball from Illan Meslier and he was booked for that.

Warnock, the BBC pundit, described it as “silly”, suggesting that Frank Lampard won’t be happy.

“I don’t understand what Davies is doing!,” said Warnock, on BBC Radio 5 Live, as relayed by BBC Sport (30 August).

“Away from home, 1-0 up, you might need to make a last ditch tackle. Lampard will be bitterly disappointed he has got a yellow for something so silly.”

Bright start

After a cagey opening 15 minutes, the visitors started to expand their game, and they got the goal.

We don’t know whether Gordon will stay at the club or not beyond the end of the transfer window, but he did everyone proud here.

He has now scored back-to-back goals, and his agility and movement throughout the season, and this game in particular have been superb.

Equally, credit should be given to Alex Iwobi who has rediscovered himself under Frank Lampard. He anticipated the opening, and played in a lovely through ball for Gordon.

It was an exquisite finish considering that Meslier came out quickly to narrow the angle. Gordon on his left foot, guided the ball into the net.

The same cannot be said about Davies. He should be looking to do more with the ball and impress his manager, but surely Lampard won’t be happy with him.

For an experienced player for him, this is silly and unexpected.
