Everton to pay £8m to bring Idrissa Gueye back to Goodison Park – Alan Myers

Everton are set to pay Paris Saint-Germain £8m to complete the signing of Idrissa Gueye, who will have his medical today according to Alan Myers.

The Toffees have been locked in negotiations with the French champions for weeks over a deal to bring the 32-year-old back to Goodison Park, but talks have stalled over an agreement between the clubs.

Everton initially wanted a free transfer, while PSG demanded a fee and it now seems that Kevin Thelwell has caved in negotiations and has agreed to pay €10m (£8m) to get Frank Lampard his man before Thursday’s deadline.

“I’m told Gana Gueye will cost Everton around €10m (£8m). Expected to have medical tomorrow,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account on the evening of 30 August.

Gueye is expected to sign a two-year contract with the club with the option of a third year, and could make his debut against Liverpool on Saturday if the club seal the deal before the deadline.

Finally

£8m seems like a high figure for a 32-year-old midfielder, but Everton know exactly what they’re getting when they bring Gueye into the club and it probably represents good value.

Gueye had been earning a big wage in Paris and the likelihood is that he will be taking a cut on that to return, knowing he is entering the twilight of his career.

Lampard showed in the 1-1 draw with Wolves that he could switch to a 4-3-3 system as the season progresses and that would allow him to field a midfield of Gueye, Amadou Onana and Alex Iwobi which would possess all the qualities needed to compete in the Premier League.

On top of that he will bring great leadership to the dressing room and great experience to a relatively young squad, something Lampard has addressed with Conor Coady and James Tarkowski’s arrivals too.

On the face of it, it’s a pricey deal but if he does what many expect then nobody will remember the fee by the time he leaves again.
