Everton: Newcastle United make James Maddison priority over Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United are unlikely to make a January transfer window move to try and sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon, according to the Northern Echo.

The Magpies were among those interested in the 21-year-old over the summer but remained cautious with their newly-found riches and opted not to spend the £60million or more the Toffees were after.

Chelsea came close but Everton decided that the move and offer came too late for a replacement to be found and now the Toon have also given up on their pursuit.

Gordon is still on Eddie Howe’s list but Newcastle are going to target their attention on trying to bring Leicester City’s English midfielder James Maddison to St James’ Parl instead.

Chelsea’s own desire to sign Gordon could be on the rocks too after Thomas Tuchel was sacked as manager following their Champions League defeat away at Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.

Brilliant

This is fantastic news for Frank Lampard and Everton who can hopefully now relax about potentially losing their second star player in as many transfer windows.

Had Richarlison stayed at Goodison Park, Farhad Moshiri may have been more tempted to shake hands with Todd Boehly at Stamford Bridge but after such a difficult 2021-22 campaign, they could not afford to lose more of their good performers (of which there were very few).

Everton

Now that the Magpies have seen how awful Brendan Rodgers’ side have been this season, there should be an open door for them to poach the Foxes’ best player and that will surely end their chase of Gordon for good should it come to fruition.

After Lampard and Kevin Thelwell manufactured a very productive end to the transfer window, the last thing they need is for one of their settled stars to leave at the next opportunity and as a boyhood Evertonian, you can’t see why he would leave for the North East except for the cash.
