Everton unlikely to move for free agent after Jordan Pickford injury

Everton are unlikely to delve into the free agent market in search of a goalkeeper despite Jordan Pickford facing a month on the sidelines, according to Sky Sports.

The 28-year-old suffered a thigh strain in the Merseyside Derby and will now miss England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday 7 September, that Pickford has had a scan and that the damage isn’t serious. However, it’s understood that he will still be out for at least four weeks.

Big blow

The pressure is really on Asmir Begović to step up and replicate Pickford’s excellent early-season form for Everton.

Pickford was a large part of the reason why Everton picked up an impressive point against Liverpool on Saturday (3 September).

The 28-year-old has pulled off some fine saves this season, as well as showing a more composed side to his game, after falling foul to the odd rash moment in the 2021/22 season.

England’s number one is a leader for Frank Lampard to call upon and will be dearly missed during his time on the sidelines.

Begovic is an experienced campaigner and should be able to slot in and replace Pickford, but it will be important for Everton’s defensive unit to remain consistent and well-drilled.

However, the Liverpool Echo did suggest on 7 September, that an exit couldn’t be ruled out for the Bosnian shot-stopper.

Conor Coady and James Tarkowski have been immense thus far for Everton and the Toffees will be looking to continue their excellent defensive record in the coming weeks.

Considering their impressive defensive resolve so far, Evertonians will be hoping for Begovic to slot in with relative ease.
