Everton starlet Lewis Warrington makes point in ‘fantastic’ Fleetwood Town display

Everton made great strides in the central midfield department over the summer and that left Lewis Warrington out of the reckoning.

The 19-year-old did make his senior debut for The Toffees in the Carabao Cup against Fleetwood Town but only those few minutes off the bench have come his way so far at Goodison Park.

As a result, he was loaned out to the Cod Army late in the transfer window and he has started his time at Highbury like a house on fire.

Especially on Tuesday evening as Scott Brown’s side were surprise 1-0 winners away at early season pace-setters Peterborough United and assistant manager Steven Whittaker was mightily impressed by the teenager.

“I thought he was fantastic,” he said to the club’s official website. “We want to play through him at times and he well at that. It’s great to see him play like that and he just needs to match those levels now week in, week out.”

He might not be desperately needed by Everton at the moment with Amadou Onana and Alex Iwobi developing a nice partnership in the middle and Idrissa Gana Gueye and James Garner ready to go behind them but he isn’t doing himself any harm right now.

All he can do is keep playing like he is and hope that it will be enough to make Lampard’s head turn over the summer and he will be heavily involved next season.

And playing under Brown, who was a naturally combative midfielder in his own right, should allow him to learn more of the dark arts of football that are not being taught at Premier League academies.

More performances like the one against Posh is exactly what he needs to make next season the one he breaks into the first team and follows in Anthony Gordon’s footsteps.
