Fabrizio Romano: Anthony Gordon wanted to ‘leave’ Everton this summer

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on Everton starlet Anthony Gordon’s future claiming the forward wanted to “leave” Goodison Park this summer.

Chelsea tried to lure the talented youngster away from Merseyside and complete a big-money move to Stamford Bridge, but failed in their efforts to do so.

Romano also suggested that Frank Lampard and the Everton hierarchy did everything in their power to keep Gordon at the club.

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Romano stated: “Anthony Gordon dominated headlines towards the end of the summer but ended up staying at Everton, so here’s an update on his situation at Goodison Park.

“Everton have wanted to offer Gordon a new deal for a long time, but it’s also up to the player. Gordon wanted Chelsea move during the summer, it was the Everton board with Frank Lampard pushing to keep Anthony.

“We will see if other clubs will enter the race or if Chelsea will try again for him. For now, it’s still too early to say for sure.”

Big decision.

It’s a big decision for Lampard and Everton to make, should they do everything they can to keep a player at the club who doesn’t want to be there?

Probably not and whilst it’s a shame to lose an academy prospect as talented as Gordon it may be the best scenario in everyone’s case to let him leave if a big bid comes in again.

If the Blues were to let go of Gordon they would need to invest the money gained from him thoroughly and effectively; something they haven’t done in the past.

Sunday’s win over West Ham proved that the Toffees have multiple other options in the squad other than Gordon who can provide attacking opportunities and goals for the team.

This seems too good of an opportunity to miss out on, Gordon’s form could easily plummet in the next few seasons and it might be the best idea to cash in on him now.
