Frank Lampard decision to change Alex Iwobi position is starting to pay off big time at Everton
Everton claimed their first victory of the season against West Ham on Sunday and Alex Iwobi was a standout performer in his new central midfield role.
Lampard made the decision to move Iwobi from the wing to a central role in the midfield; something that is starting to pay off big time for his Everton team.
Iwobi is starting to prove why he should be the first name on Lampard’s teamsheet every week and an electric performance against West Ham all but confirmed this.
The classy display on Sunday at Goodison Park from Iwobi proved exactly why Lampard now utilises his talents in the central midfield role.
Classy but with an engine to match, Iwobi was able to receive the ball on the pivot and spray balls to Everton attackers Demarai Gray and Neil Maupay.
The 26-year-old demonstrated this perfectly for the only goal of the game; where he slipped Frenchman Maupay in with relative ease for the match-winner.
Iwobi has gone from one of the Evertonians’ least favourite transfers to an absolute vital starter who the team’s midfield ticks around.
A lot of credit has to go to Lampard for recognising that Iwobi could be great in a central role, however, it’s a testament to the 26-year-old’s hard work ethic and talent also.
The former Arsenal winger has slowly become a fan favourite and with the Blues backing his name, his ceiling can be extremely high with the Merseyside club.
Iwobi was instrumental in Neil Maupay’s goal on Sunday and has also played a part in Everton’s last four goals, assisting three of them.
The Nigerian international looks to have found his midfield partnership’s now too with summer signings Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye complimenting him perfectly.
Everton’s team as a whole are starting to show more bite and it seems Iwobi will be at the forefront of anything good the Blues do this campaign.
