Alan Shearer names Everton duo Alex Iwobi and James Tarkowski in Premier League team of the week

Alan Shearer has named Everton duo Alex Iwobi and James Tarkowski in his Premier League team of the week after the win over West Ham.

The Toffees picked up a hard-earned three points at Goodison Park on Sunday for their first win of the season, with several players putting in stand out performances during the game.

But Shearer, speaking to the official Premier League website [20 September] picked out two players in particular as two of the better performers across the league.

Upon selecting Tarkowski as part of his three man defence Shearer described him as a “tower of strength for Everton at the back,” while he justified his Iwobi pick by saying it was a “much-improved performance and set up the winning goal.”

Iwobi responded to the inclusion on his personal Twitter account, saying he was “honoured” to be included.

Everton’s performance as a collective was excellent at the weekend and the result against West Ham was fully deserved and had been coming for a while.

It’s now five Premier League games unbeaten and a big reason for that run is the form of both Iwobi and Tarkowski who have dragged everyone else up to their level alongside Conor Coady.

Iwobi has been progressive and energetic in midfield and brought the best of his attributes out, which has helped Amadou Onana settle alongside him and given the forwards a platform to perform too.

Tarkowski has been everything that Lampard had hoped he would be, a leader at the back who leads by example with his performances and his voice.

It’s been a great start to the season and it’s great to see two key players getting the credit they deserve for their part in it, and hopefully they can continue it after the international break.

Shearer is clearly a big fan of this current Everton side and how they’re performing, as he also praised Nathan Patterson for his performance in the game too.
