Everton owners slammed by Gabriel Agbonlahor for hiring Rafa Benitez, appointment compared to other managerial disaster
Gabriel Agbonlahor has questioned why the Everton heirarchy even considered Rafa Benitez for the job due to his links with rivals Liverpool.
Benitez recently claimed that his spell at Goodison Park was made impossible due to his previous ties to Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
The Spaniard lasted just over six months at Everton before he was sacked, but talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor doesn’t blame Benitez for taking the job.
Instead, the former Aston Villa star pointed the finger at Everton’s owners for even considering him for the job, and compared his disastrous tenure to another managerial appointment.
Speaking to talkSPORT on Thursday morning, Agbonlahor said: “How dare the Everton hierarchy give Rafa Benitez the job.
“Out of all the managers available in the world, you go an bring him in – it’s never going to work!
“Alex McLeish came to Villa after relegating Birmingham City, a month later he came to Villa and it was never going to work.”
Match made in hell
Everton fans voiced their opinions about Benitez’ appointment early on. Protests, banners and chants all told the Toffees board exactly what fans thought about the Spaniard.
But even after his appointment was completed at Goodison Park – Benitez was given more than enough chances by Everton fans.
Frankly, his downfall had nothing to do with being an ex-Red or in fact anything to do with Liverpool. Benitez simply wasn’t good enough.
He was given full control of transfers and given plenty of backing by the board, but his signings were poor and his tactics outdated.
Conor Coady has shown exactly how an ex-Red can still be welcomed in by the blue half of Merseyside. Benitez just failed to perform and was rightly sacked.
Agbonlahor is right – the appointment never should have happened in the first place. But once it went through, the only person Benitez should be blaming is himself.
