Anthony Gordon backed to ‘gatecrash’ England squad ahead of two Premier League stars – talkSPORT pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Anthony Gordon’s form at Everton could help him pip Jarrod Bowen and Jadon Sancho to the England squad.

Gordon is yet to make his senior debut for England, but is a regular star for the Under-21s side and is regularly shining in the Premier League with the Toffees.

The 21-year-old winger recently opened up on his desire to play in this year’s World Cup, and talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor has outlined how he believes Gordon can make the squad.

Everton

Speaking to talkSPORT, Agbonlahor believes Gordon is in direct competition with Bowen and Sancho.

“I think if Gordon continues the way he is playing at the moment, he can gatecrash that England squad,” he said.

“Bowen has a lot to prove over the next six weeks. He needs to get goals and assists back in his game.

“Sancho needs to continue his form. Sometimes managers like to take that one player who people wouldn’t expect to go to the World Cup.”

A surprise package

Gordon has shown his ability to perform in big games, and he’s also starting to portray consistency with the Toffees this season.

He’s right on the brink of the England squad and must be catching Gareth Southgate’s eye with his performances this season.

Everton

Agbonlahor is right to pick out Bowen and Sancho as his direct competition, and Gordon will fancy his chances of outperforming both in the Premier League.

Bowen has started terribly for West Ham and only travelled to the latest England camp off the back of last season, and Sancho doesn’t seem to be favoured by Southgate at all.

The Manchester United man is in good form, but that should only spur Gordon on further to shine at Everton in the next few weeks before the squad is announced.

Staying fit and staying in form has to be Gordon’s top priority, and he could offer Southgate something different if he wants to bring a wildcard to Qatar.
