Convinced Mohammed Kudus to stay after interest from Everton - Alfred Schreuder

Alfred Schreuder has revealed he convinced attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus to stay at the club amidst interest from Everton in the summer.

The Toffees made an approach to sign the 22-year-old in the recently concluded transfer window but their bid of £15 million was rejected by the Dutch club [Independent].

The Ajax manager was quoted in a report by where he revealed how he convinced Kudus to stay at Johan Cruijff Arena.

“During the period that Everton wanted him,” said the 49-year-old. “[But] I also told him: You are still going to be very important to us. That has come true.”

Missed chance

Everton had an impressive transfer window in the summer where they signed eight first-team players. Despite making so many additions, one area where the Toffees failed to strengthen was the attacking midfield.

As things stand, there are no players currently in the squad who can play just behind the striker or as a false nine. Therefore, signing someone like Kudus would’ve definitely solved that problem but it did not turn out to be that way.

It will be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club would actually make another move for the 22-year-old in January, especially after his brilliant start for the Dutch club in the 2022/23 season where he has scored seven times and provided an assist.

Kudus has been an Ajax player since the summer of 2020 when he moved from Nordsjaelland in a deal worth £8.1 million. Since then, he has represented his current club in 53 matches across all competitions where he has managed to score 12 goals and provided five assists [Transfermarkt].
