Vitaliy Mykolenko named in WhoScored team of the week after shining for Everton v Southampton

Vitaliy Mykolenko continued his superb form for Everton on Saturday as the Toffees came back from a goal down to beat Southampton.

The Ukrainian defender has been a huge part of Everton’s new-look defence which now boasts the best defensive record in the Premier League.

Mykolenko impressed again during Saturday’s clash, and did particularly well on his defensive duties.

As a result, Mykolenko racked up an impressive 7.57 WhoScored rating, which firmly earns him a spot in the team of the week.

“Everton currently now boast the best defensive record in the league and even after Joe Aribo’s strike for Southampton on Saturday, they have only conceded seven goals,” wrote WhoScored writer Ciaran McLoughlin.

“Part of the reason for this has been Vitaliy Mykolenko’s displays at the back, which continued against the Saints, with a credible five tackles and three interceptions.”

Resilient

In a matter of months, Everton have gone from having a fragile and vulnerable defence to one of the most impressive back fours in the Premier League.

Credit has to go to Frank Lampard and the recruitment team for picking up both James Tarkowski and Conor Coady over the summer, but Mykolenko has also been much improved this season.

Everton

With a stable foundation now behind him, the 23-year-old has often gone marauding forward down the left to support the attack. But while his offensive displays have improved, he’s still shown great commitment and grit in getting back and helping keep clean sheets.

There’s no doubt that Lampard has found his favoured defensive line this season, with Mykolenko firmly nailing down his starting spot at left-back.

He has plenty of room for improvement, but his attitude and mentality prove he’s up to the task, and he’s quickly become a fan favourite around Goodison Park.

His toughest tests are still yet to come, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle United making up Everton’s next three fixtures. But the side are full of confidence and defending well. Bring it on.
