Idrissa Gueye sleepwalks to 2/10, Alex Iwobi only a 6 for MOTM – Everton player ratings vs Manchester United
Everton were beaten 2-1 at Goodison Park by Manchester United on Sunday night as Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th career goal at club level.
The Toffees started the game quickly and well, with Alex Iwobi curling an effort into the top corner inside the opening ten minutes before summer signing Antony equalised less than ten minutes later.
Ronaldo then hit his landmark goal on the counter-attack to give the Reds a 2-1 lead at half-time after Casemiro won the ball back and released him with one pass.
Marcus Rashford had a goal disallowed for handball in the second half that would have made it 3-1, but ultimately the Toffees couldn’t level it up and their unbeaten run was ended.
Here is how Goodison News rated the performance of each Everton player from the game…
Jordan Pickford – 5/10
Pickford’s distribution remains arguably the strongest attribute in his game, and his leadership is growing with each passing minute too. Arguably could have done better for both goals, but that would be harsh criticism.
Seamus Coleman – 4/10
No surprise that he was way off the pace against an in-form Marcus Rashford. He struggled to provide his trademark energy in both directions and it’s clear to see why he’s behind Nathan Patterson in the pecking order now.
Conor Coady – 4/10
This was the toughest game of the season in terms of how hard the defence had to work, and Coady struggled with the pace and movement of the attack. Harsh maybe, but he wasn’t good despite how good he has been this season.
James Tarkowski – 5/10
Much like Coady, he struggled with the United attack. He was a bit more forward thinking with his passing and trying to intercept attacks, and won more aerial duels than any of his teammates as of the 79th minute.
Vitalii Mykolenko – 5/10
He was caught high up the pitch for United’s equaliser that allowed Antony to score, and offered very little going forward for the United defence to have to worry about.
Idrissa Gueye – 2/10
Gueye has been good this season but this was comfortably his worst game since putting on an Everton shirt for a second time. He couldn’t cope with the speed and movement of United’s attack and was slack on the ball too.
Alex Iwobi – 6/10
A stunning goal early on and constantly tried to drive with the ball and make things happen. Was unfortunately let down by his teammates in reality, because there wasn’t much more he could do on his own.
Amadou Onana – 5/10
Went toe-to-toe with five-time Champions League winner Casemiro for most of the game and held his own. Was a bit slack in possession on more than one occasion though, but definitely some encouraging stuff to work with.
Anthony Gordon – 3/10
A quiet performance from the key man, but he was starved of service. Got a needless booking for a tackle that looked okay at the time, and now misses the next game through suspension.
Demarai Gray – 4/10
Considering his good form this season, he didn’t cause Diogo Dalot nearly enough trouble in his favoured left wing role meaning Everton had next to no outlet in attack.
Neal Maupay – 4/10
Was completely starved of service in this game and wasn’t much he could do about it. He tried to liven the crowd up a few times by getting into mini scuffles, but to no avail. Just wasn’t his day unfortunately.
