Cork City check international clause as Everton agree deal in principle to sign David Harrington

Cork City have been forced to check international clauses in the agreed deal for Everton to sign David Harrington in January, according to the Irish Independent.

It has been reported on their website that the young goalkeeper is being tracked by Wales to solve their issues in between the sticks, despite his Irish roots.

Despite upcoming surgery on a shoulder injury in November, Harrington is still expected to complete his move to Goodison Park in New Year.

Cork City sprung into action after being made aware of Wales’ interest in the keeper.

There is an international cap clause in the deal, which will likely spring another payment on top of the transfer fee, and it does not apply to a specific country.

That means whether Harrington makes it on the international stage with Wales or Ireland, Everton will still need to honour that from the agreement that is in place.

Everton

Smart.

It will be very good business to bring in a much younger goalkeeper into the ranks in January.

Looking at the current options at the club behind Jordan Pickford, there is Asmir Begovic, Andy Lonergan and Eldin Jakupovic, all of who are way beyond 30-years-old.

Harrington would add another splash of youth into the mix, albeit starting in the academy, but he is already catching the eye on the international stage which is great news.

Hopefully, this surgery can go smoothly in November, and he can arrive in top condition to hit the ground running at Finch Farm when put under the spotlight.

Everton have really changed their transfer strategy over the past year and this is just going to be another example of smart business, rather than just throwing big money at problems again.

Kevin Thelwell and Frank Lampard have worked very well together since joining forces, and we are only seeing the benefits of that right now in the Premier League.

Long may this continue.
