Everton contact Villarreal over on-loan Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia

Everton have been in contact with Villarreal over a move for 25-year-old striker Boulaye Dia, according to Italian news outlet Tutto Salernitana.

Dia is currently on loan at club U.S. Salernitana 1919 and the Serie A club have an option to buy the forward in the summer of 2023.

However, Tutto Salernitana (12 October) report that a “couple” of English clubs, one being Everton, have contacted the Spanish side over a potential transfer.

It’s understood that Everton have offered in the region £13million and £14million for the Senegalese striker, which is considerably more than what Salernitana can sign him for.

It’s fair to say Dia is a name that most Evertonians would never have heard of. The 25-year-old has scored four goals in eight appearances in Italy and looks to have rediscovered his form after struggling at Villarreal. He would certainly be an interesting addition at Goodison Park, that’s for sure.

If these reports are to be believed and Everton have made an offer, it would be interesting to see if Villarreal cancelled the loan-to-buy clause in his contract to recoup a larger transfer fee from elsewhere.

Whether the Toffees need another striker is up for debate with Dominic Calvert-Lewin now back from injury and Neal Maupay playing well. Salomon Rondon is a player who could make way in January (Paul Brown, Give Me Sport 12 October) and that could open the door for another striker to join the club.

Rondon’s stint at Goodison Park has been one to forget and it’s certainly time that he did depart that club. This summer was one of change for the Toffees but there is still work to be done and moving Rondon on has to be a priority in January.
