Alex Iwobi has become the face of Frank Lampard’s new-look Everton midfield

Alex Iwobi has become the face of Frank Lampard’s rebuilt Everton midfield this campaign, shining bright in his newly found central position.

Often paired alongside summer signings Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye, the dynamic midfield three have highlighted Lampard’s Everton rebuilding process.

Iwobi had a rocky start to life at Goodison Park but a move into central midfield has done him the world of good, Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas has described him as “one of the best players in the Premier League” season so far.

Everton

“He’s rebuilt the midfield, he’s moved Alex Iwobi into the middle and he’s been probably one of the best players in the Premier League season so far,” said Thomas as quoted by lcfc.com.

“They brought back Gueye from PSG and he’s had an immediate impact along with Onana, a youngster from Lille, who looks like a real player.”

Revived.

Iwobi has completely revived his career in central midfield, cheating his demise in the Premier League in the process.

He’s ranking first in every category you would want your midfielder to be part of and thriving within Lampard’s dynamic midfield three. An absolute workhorse for the Blues, Iwobi is still managing to imprint his creativity on the Toffees too.

He sits top of the list for distance covered in Lampard’s setup (128km) and for assists (5), showing the midfielder’s versatility in the middle of the park.

It’s maybe his regaining of possession that is his most valued asset to Everton at the moment, another statistic he ranks at the top of.

What’s missing here for Iwobi at the moment is a clinical forward to make the most of the midfielder’s chances.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin may provide this, but dipping into the market for a proven poacher in January wouldn’t go amiss. Iwobi’s stats suggest he is waiting to form a deadly partnership with someone up top to go to the next level.
