Jamie Carragher stunned by Alex Iwobi failure early in Everton v Leicester live on Sky Sports
Jamie Carragher was stunned that “absolutely fantastic” Everton star Alex Iwobi missed a golden early chance against Leicester City.
In just the sixth minute of the Saturday evening kick off at Goodison Park Idrissa Gueye caught Boubakare Soumaré in possession outside his own area and Dominic Calvert-Lewin picked up the loose ball to play in Iwobi.
But the Nigeria international surprisingly fired wide of the far post from a great position to the amazement of the fans in the stands and Carragher.
Speaking live on the Sky Sports commentary, in a clip that was then posted to Twitter, the former Liverpool defender said: “They just dawdle on the ball on the edge of the box. It’s fantastic from Everton to win it back, and that’s such a clever pass from Calvert-Lewin.
“He can’t believe that man’s missed it, the form he’s in Alex Iwobi, he’s been absolutely fantastic. That’s something he has to finish.”
Fine margins
The Foxes succeeded in quieting the Everton crowd as they had the better of the first 45 minutes and could easily have been ahead before Youri Tielemans did punish them with a stunner from range in first-half stoppage time.
The Toffees were uncharacteristically sloppy in possession a few times, with some mistakes in defence almost letting the likes of James Maddison score.
Jordan Pickford was also below his usual standards on the ball and Frank Lampard will definitely want to see an improvement in the second half.

In that context it was all the more of a disappointment to see Iwobi, so often one of the key performers for this side this season, fire wide with the early chance.
Had he found the net it would have put a different complexion on proceedings, and settled an increasingly edgy fanbase in the stands.
Instead Leicester take the lead into the break and Everton need a major improvement when they come back out to turn this game around.
